Search is turning into answers, so your brand needs to be the answer

AI Overviews and AI Mode answer searches before anyone clicks. Here is what generative engine optimization means and a checklist to start.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making your brand the source that AI search tools quote when they answer a question. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode now answer many searches directly on the results page, and Pew Research found people click a regular result far less often when an AI summary appears. If search is becoming answers, the goal moves from ranking a page to being the answer.

Search results are turning into answers.

For twenty years, search meant ten blue links. Now a growing share of Google searches open with an AI-written summary at the top, and Google's AI Mode turns the whole page into a conversation. AI Mode launched in the US in 2025 and expanded through the year; by October 2025 it was available in Arabic and dozens of other languages, which brought it properly to the GCC and Egypt.

Add ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and the assistants built into phones, and a lot of people now ask a question and read an answer without ever visiting a website.

Fewer clicks are reaching websites, though the numbers are estimates.

The best-known study comes from Pew Research Center, which tracked real browsing by US adults in 2025. When an AI Overview appeared, users clicked a traditional result in about 8% of visits, against about 15% when there was no summary. Links inside the AI Overview itself were clicked in roughly 1% of visits, and people were more likely to end their browsing session altogether. Google disputed the methodology, and other studies give different figures, so treat all zero-click numbers as estimates. The direction, though, is consistent across almost every study we have read.

That is uncomfortable for brands that built their marketing on search traffic. It is also an opening: the AI answer has to come from somewhere, and it might as well be you.

Here is what GEO actually involves.

GEO grows out of good SEO. Most of what makes a page rank also makes it quotable. The difference is in how directly you answer, how clearly you prove it, and how often other trusted places repeat it.

Answer the question in the first few lines.

AI tools pull short, self-contained passages. Pages that open with a plain two or three sentence answer, then go into detail, get quoted far more easily than pages that warm up for four paragraphs. You will notice every post on this blog starts that way.

Make facts easy to check.

Specific numbers, dates, names and places, with sources, give a model something solid to cite. Vague claims such as "industry-leading" give it nothing.

Be consistent everywhere your brand appears.

Your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, press coverage and directory listings should all describe you in the same words: what you do, where, and for whom. Models build their picture of a brand from many sources, and contradictions make them hedge or skip you.

Earn mentions on sites the models trust.

Coverage in respected outlets, industry lists, partner pages and genuine reviews all feed the answer. This is old-fashioned PR, and it matters more now.

Write in the languages your customers search in.

With AI Mode in Arabic, a GCC or Egyptian brand that only publishes in English is invisible to a big part of its market. Proper Arabic content, written for people, is one of the quickest GEO wins in the region.

Here is a practical GEO checklist for the next quarter.

  1. List the twenty questions customers actually ask before they buy from you.
  2. Ask those questions in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and note who gets cited.
  3. Write or rewrite one page per question, with a direct answer at the top and an FAQ at the bottom.
  4. Add structured data (organisation, product, FAQ, article) so machines can read the page cleanly.
  5. Fix your brand description so it matches across every profile and listing.
  6. Publish in Arabic where your customers search in Arabic.
  7. Pitch one useful, data-backed story to a trusted outlet each month.
  8. Repeat step two every month and track whether you appear more often.

We are applying this to our own site first.

Nabil Khaled, iklipse's founder, decided that the agency should test GEO on itself before selling it to anyone. That is part of why this blog exists: each post opens with a direct answer, cites its sources and names the markets we work in. iklipse is a creative and AI production agency working across the GCC, Egypt, the US and Europe, and we want the AI answer to "who does AI-infused production in the Gulf" to include us.

For clients, our Digital Marketing & SEO team now plans search and GEO together, and pairs it with social media work, because social profiles are another place the models read. If you want an honest look at how AI tools describe your brand today, ask us.

Frequently asked questions.

What is generative engine optimization?

GEO is the practice of making your content and brand easy for AI search tools such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT to find, trust and quote in their answers.

Is GEO different from SEO?

It builds on SEO. Technical health and good content still matter. GEO adds a stronger focus on direct answers, verifiable facts, consistent brand information and mentions on trusted sites.

Is Google AI Mode available in Arabic?

Yes. Google expanded AI Mode to Arabic and more than 35 other languages in October 2025.

How do I know if my brand appears in AI answers?

Ask the questions your customers ask in the main AI tools and record who gets cited. Do it monthly; there is no perfect tracking tool yet.
